“I can’t accept what Russians are doing in Ukraine” – says Russian footballer Yevgeni Bashkirov

Russian footballer Yevgeni Bashkirov recently gave an interview to Kamil Warzocha, from the Weszło portal, in which he reiterated his opposition to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and talked about the Kremlin’s powerful propaganda machine.

Bashkirov is mostly known in Poland for having played in the country’s first division (Ekstraklasa) with the Lower-Silesian team of Zagłębie Lubin. On 24 February, he immediately voiced his outrage due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He lives now temporarily in Andorra.

“Since  24 February, I smile 90% less compared to my whole life before. […] I am frustrated when I look out the window. I feel sad when I hear what is happening in Ukraine. But […] my feelings are nothing compared to the suffering of the Ukrainian people” – the 31-year-old midfielder confessed.

In the past year, the Russian midfielder faced several unpleasant situations more or less related to his nationality. Several clubs decided to maintain their distance from him. Since the outbreak of the war, he’s been trying to show that a Russian can also be a good person, despite all the negative things associated with them.

He also gave his impression on the efficiency of Moscow’s propaganda and the way it impacts Russian citizens.

Propaganda in Russia is a bit like brain annihilation that covers the entire country […] It does not allow you to be open, well-informed, and honest,” – he bitterly noted.

The Russian player went on by emphasising that he feels ready to say whatever it takes in order to put an end to the war. He underlined that he has relatives with Ukrainian passports living in Odesa, which makes his worries even worse.

When asked how he feels knowing that some of his fellow men perpetrate atrocious crimes and rapes, Bashkirov replied that “it’s simply a reality he can’t accept”.

Human life is, above all, a unique creation that needs freedom […] in order to continue to create, not to destroy each other” – he concluded.
