Poland demands the extradition of the murderer of a Polish soldier

Poland’s FM Radosław Sikorski has called on Belarusian authorities to locate and extradite the individual responsible for the murder of a Polish soldier, who was killed while defending the border. The soldier was fatally stabbed as he attempted to prevent an illegal crossing.

When someone affixes a knife to the tip of a spear and strikes through the fence, across the state border, at a Polish soldier, they are not refugees but ordinary criminals,” stated Sikorski at a meeting with voters.

Sikorski also mentioned that an investigation into the soldier’s death is currently underway. “We demand that the Belarusian authorities identify the murderer and hand him over to the Polish authorities as part of the ongoing investigation by our Ministry of Justice,” he declared.

He added that a protest note would be delivered to the Belarusian chargé d’affaires at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs shortly. “I assure you that the Belarusian authorities will face consequences for this. It is completely unacceptable for a neighbouring country to act in this manner at the border,” Sikorski stressed.

The recent incident has shocked Poland, especially following the news of two Polish soldiers being detained by the military police for firing warning shots at a group of migrants attempting to cross the Polish-Belarusian border illegally earlier this year.

The government has announced a swift investigation into the soldiers’ detention. President Andrzej Duda has called for a National Security Council meeting, while the opposition has demanded the resignation of the defence minister, the justice minister, and even the prime minister.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz expressed his disapproval of the detentions, describing the action as unacceptable on the social media platform X.

On Thursday, he reported that he was informed of the incident by the Military Police commander. Kosiniak-Kamysz clarified that the decision to detain the soldiers was made independently by the Military Police, without informing him, the attorney general, or other ministers. He assured that any overreach of authority would be met with appropriate consequences.

The gravity of the situation on the eastern border was highlighted by Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the main opposition party, Law and Justice (PiS), who stated that Polish soldiers must be confident in their ability to use all legally permitted measures, including firearms, to ensure border security.

Similarly, Deputy Speaker of the Sejm Krzysztof Bosak from the Confederation party argued that both the justice minister and defence minister should step down, insisting that it is unacceptable to arrest soldiers for using firearms against those attempting to cross the border illegally.

Conversely, Sejm Speaker and Poland 2050 leader Szymon Hołownia called for calm and confidence in the state institutions to determine whether the soldiers’ actions were lawful.
