„40 million Poles are ready to stand up with arms in hand to defend Poland” – the Polish PM said at a shooting range

On Monday, the 13th of June, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki participated in the opening of a shooting range in the Silesian town of Myszków. During a speech, he announced that MP’s „will be working on access to weapons in the coming months„.

Morawiecki underlined that even though the improvement of Poles’ shooting skills, he hopes it will not have to be used on the battlefield.

We must be heavily armed to deter the enemy, our army must be so strong that, in the best way, it never has to be used or prove itself in battle,” he emphasised.

The Prime Minister further mentioned the government program titled „A shooting range in every county„. He explained that in his opinion, shooting ranges are needed and that the government’s focus is now on “the modern ones, available to all residents”.

Morawiecki argued that access to weapons remains an issue that needs regulations. “Our parliamentarians […] will work in the coming months on access to weapons. Especially for young boys, for gentlemen, it is necessary to emphasise that access to weapons is primarily to make us, as a state […] stronger and better trained in the use of weapons” – he added.

During his speech, the Prime Minister pointed out that the war in Ukraine reminded us that freedom is not given once and for all and that just like the generations before us had to fight for freedom with weapons in hand, we must also remain vigilant.

We must know that this time of peace, perhaps for longer years, for a longer period, is over. This is because of the barbaric, unprovoked attack by Russia on Ukraine […] If Russia should ever think to attack Poland, Russia must know, the Kremlin must know that in Poland 40 million Poles are ready to stand up with arms in hand to defend their homeland” – he stated.

Morawiecki concluded his speech by underlining the importance of strengthening the Polish army and civil society by “constructing new types of [Polish] weapons and purchasing […] modern weapons abroad”.

So far, Poland has been among the European countries with the least guns per capita. Such a situation dates back to the mid-20th century when Poland’s fate was decided single-handedly by Stalin.
