Rishi Sunak will face Liz Truss in the final round of the race to replace Boris Johnson at 10 Downing Street.
Former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak managed to maintain his lead, winning 137 votes, while Foreign Secretary Liz Truss came in the second position with 113 votes. With her 105 votes, International Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt could not make it to the final.
Sunak and Truss are now the two remaining candidates to become not only leaders of the Conservative Party but also Prime Minister.
By the 5th of September at the latest, the results of the final votes are expected to be known. In the meantime, Boris Johnson is to remain in office as caretaker Prime Minister.
8 candidates initially made it through to the first round of voting on the 12th of July. Their number gradually diminished following the five stages of voting among Tories.
On Wednesday afternoon, Rishi Sunak posted a Twitter video where he argues that he is “the only candidate” who can beat Keir Starmer in the next election.
