The world number 1 is back at her best form. In the first half of the 2022 season, she won six straight tournaments and notched an impressive 37 consecutive match wins, this century’s longest winning streak on the women’s tour.
Since her triumph at the French Open, the Polish star slowed down her breathtaking pace. She arrived at Flushing Meadows with a 4-4 record in her last 8 matches.
On Saturday night, Iga was the one in control throughout her confrontation with the 105th-ranked American.
„I just took it match by match. I wasn’t expecting, maybe too much because of the losses. […] But it’s not like I lost confidence or something. I still know anything can happen in these tournaments,” – she explained shortly after she win.
Świątek has advanced to the second week at 9 of her last 11 Grand Slam tournaments. With more than 4,000 in front of the Estonian Anett Kontaveit in the WTA ranking, she will remain comfortably seated in her number 1 seat no matter the outcome of the tournament at least until the beginning of the 2023 season.
Iga’s upcoming match is scheduled for Monday at 4 PM (British time). The Pole will face the German Jule Niemeier (WTA 108) for a place in the quarter-finals.
