Iga Świątek showed who the boss is in San Diego!

Last night, Iga Świątek won her eighth tournament of the season in San Diego. The world number 1 defeated the Croatian Donna Vekić 6:3, 3:6, and 6:0.

Iga had recently been denied the trophy in Ostrava despite a good start in the final. This time, the 21-year-old raised the bar even higher and secured the 12th title of her young career.

The first set started as expected, with apparent domination of the Pole, who broke early on and cruised to make it one set to nothing. The second set was much more complicated. Having nothing to lose against the tournament’s big favourite, Vekić played more aggressively and returned to one set all.

That is when the Varsovian ended all speculations of a potential choking from her side. She displayed an outstanding level of tennis, to which she got us used in the first half of the season. In front of her, the Croatian was running out of energy and ideas to confront the unstoppable “Iga machine”.

Eventually, Iga bageled her opponent in the ultimate set, securing her number 1 position in the WTA ranking even more by doing so. The Pole is now 5600 points ahead of the Tunisian Ons Jabeur in the ranking.

In other words, no other player can deny her the throne at least until spring, even if she happened to get an injury. She is already the 15th female player with the most weeks at number 1 in history.

With 8 titles this year, including two grand slams, Iga Świątek leaves no doubt as to whom the boss of tennis is right now. Her ratio of wins and defeats is 64 to 8, including a mind-blowing winning streak of 37 consecutive matches from February to June.
