An Evening with Sir John Madejski

Sir John Madejski returns to Ognisko Polskie due to popular demand, presenting his life and work. You will have the opportunity to find out about the philanthropist and businessman who’s commercial interests include property, broadcast media, hotels, restaurants, publishing and football.

Sir John Robert Madejski, OBE, DL is a philanthropist and businessman who’s commercial interests include property, broadcast media, hotels, restaurants, publishing and football.

Born Robert John Hurst, he adopted the surname of his stepfather, Zygmunt Madejski, a serving Polish airman during World War II.

After founding the magazine which became Auto Trader, he was appointed chairman of Reading F.C. with the Madejski Stadium named after him. In 2000 he received an OBE for his contribution to Reading Football Club and the Reading community, and in 2006 he was awarded Freedom of the Borough for his role in the growth of football in Reading, and his support for academia and the Arts.

Awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by the University of Reading in 2007, he succeeded Lord Carrington as Chancellor of the University of Reading. A lecture theatre at the University of Reading, and a gallery at the Museum of Reading are named after him.

Additionally, The Royal Academy of Arts in Piccadilly, London, unveiled the John Madejski Fine Rooms at Burlington House in 2004, with The Victoria and Albert Museum opening the John Madejski Garden in 2014.
