Rishi Sunak announced a „climate change” fund at COP 27

Rishi Sunak has been PM for just a few weeks, but is already triggering powerful emotions among the British public. During a speech at COP 27 in Egypt, he spoke about the UK’s readiness to continue efforts to tackle “climate change”. 

London will allocate £65.5m for clean energy investments green tech innovation in Egypt and Kenya. The UK will also launch new Forests and Climate Leaders’ Partnership and confirm more than £150m for the protection of natural habitats and rainforests, including the Amazon and the Congo Basin. 

Rishi Sunak also reiterated Britain’s commitment to “supporting countries on the frontline of climate change”. Other British investments in this matter include £1.5bn for Somalia and Pakistan, and £3bn for Nairobi’s Railway City & hydropower project. 

More broadly, the UK will allocate £11.6bn on climate finance and £65.5m Clean Energy Innovation. 

By honouring the pledges we made in Glasgow, we can turn our struggle against climate change into a global mission for new jobs and clean growth […] And we can bequeath our children a greener planet and a more prosperous future. That’s a legacy we could be proud of” – the British PM explained during his speech. 

According to the government’s official website, the UK is working with G7 allies “to provide countries with reliable, transparent sources of sustainable infrastructure financing”.
