On Thursday, 19 January, Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki gave an interview with CNN’s Richard Quest at the World Economic Forum in Davos, in which he criticised Berlin’s stance regarding Ukraine.
The Polish head of government underlined, on the one hand, the outstanding efforts of the Polish population for the past year in the welcoming and housing of millions of refugees who fled Ukraine since the outbreak of the conflict on 24 February 2022.

He further stressed that Poland has been giving heavy weapons (including Patriot missiles and tanks) to their war-torn neighbour for quite some time.
When asked about Germany’s reluctance to allow Poland to hand over its Leopard tanks to Ukraine, Morawiecki spoke about the “procrastination” that can be observed in this regard. “I believe many German politicians are still embedded in the previous era. […] They have to reinvent themselves,” – he explained.
The Polish PM was later asked about Poland’s upcoming parliamentary elections and the fact that most polls indicate a defeat of the ruling United Right. Morawiecki replied that most polls actually announce a new victory for his camp.
When questioned about the potentiality of Poland going into recession, the Polish leader argued that Quest must have received “wrong notes” on this matter.
“Last year, Poland had a 4.5-5% GDP growth […] and forecast 1-2% of growth in 2023. I know Germany’s going to go into recession, probably Italy, maybe the United Kingdom, but not Poland,” he assured.
