Most Ukrainians want a military-political union with the UK and Poland

A recent poll conducted by the UNIAN news agency reveals that a vast majority of Ukrainians are in favour of the creation of a military-political strategic alliance between their country and the UK, Poland, but also Lithuania.

85% of the surveyed Ukrainians support would like to see the further development of a military and political union. Only 3% of respondents said to be against the establishment of such a union. 7% declared to be indifferent toward the idea, and 5 had “no opinion” on that matter.

In parallel to the question concerning Poland and the UK, Ukrainian citizens were asked about their opinion regarding a Polish-Lithuanian-Ukrainian political-military alliance. In this case, also, the results left no doubt as to the predominant mood reigning in the war-torn country.

80% of the surveyed said to be “in favour” of such tighter cooperation, with only 6% being against it. The prospect of such a potential union left 9% indifferent and 5% with “no opinion.

The survey also revealed that Ukrainian support for accessing NATO is at a historical high point. 86% of Ukrainians declare that they would vote to join the Transatlantic Alliance if a referendum on that issue happened to be held, while merely 3% would oppose it, and 8% would not participate in the vote.

Public support for joining the EU is also at an all-time high, with 87% being in favour of it.  Interestingly, the authors of the survey emphasise that support for joining the EU and NATO is almost very similar among representatives of all Ukrainian age brackets, income groups, and even regions.

A thousand respondents aged 18 and over participated in what was already the 20th nationwide survey organised since the outbreak of the war, as the Interfax-Ukraine agency points out. All regions of Ukraine were polled except for the occupied territories of Donbas and Crimea.

A week before Russia invaded mainland Ukraine, the British–Polish–Ukrainian trilateral came into existence. Its aims include the improvement of cybersecurity, energy security, and the tackling of disinformation.
