Join Tate Modern on 24 February for a mix of artist-led workshops, music and more as we celebrate the Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz.

Hyundai Commission: Cecilia Vicuña

Chilean artist and poet Cecilia Vicuña’s commission embraces radical textile sculpture, combining natural materials and traditional crafts. Vicuña explores the pressing concerns of ecology, community and social justice.

Workshop: Hessian Forms with The London Loom

Magdalena Abakanowicz used found materials from sisal to hessian to create her giant abstract sculptures. Join Francesca Kletz of The London Loom to weave hessian and create unique sculptural shapes.

Stories with Rachel Rose Reid – Polish Folklore, Myths and Legends

Sit back and enjoy words woven with enchantment from storyteller Rachel Rose Reid. Hear rich folklore stories of Polish woodlands brimming with life.

18.15–18.45 Art, Punk and Rebellion: Join writer Sara Raza, author of Punk Orientalism: The Art of Rebellion (Black Dog Press) and Dina Akhmadeeva, Assistant Curator of International Art at Tate Modern, as they discuss the spaces and places once associated with the former Soviet Union focusing on artistic resistance.

19.00–19.30 Art, Land and Shamanism: Join us for a discussion exploring the link between artists and shamanic practices today with writer and mythologist Martin Shaw.

20.00–20.30 Polish Theatre: From Grotowski’s ‘Poor Theatre’ to Kantor’s avant-garde, hear about Poland’s theatre traditions. Join puppeteer Nenagh Watson and artist Sam Derounian, hosted by Liat Rosenthal, Senior Creative Producer at Tate Modern.

21.00–21.30 Abakanowicz Today: Contemporary artists and curators from Poland discuss the legacy and influence of Abakanowicz. Hear from Tosia Leniarska and Wojciech Rusin, hosted by cultural producer Anna Jaskiewicz.

The talks at 19.00, 20.00 and 21.00 will have BSL interpretation

Workshop: Weaving Wonderland with Freeweaver SAORI Studio

Location: Blavatnik Building, Level 6

Freeweaver Studio introduces its unique handmade Japanese floor looms. See the creative process close-up with live demos and learn about the Saori freeweaving technique. Try your hand at some innovative weaving skills, no experience needed.

Workshop: Biomorphic Collage

Location: Turbine Hall Shop, Natalie Bell Building, Level 0

Combine fantasy and nature to create a unique collage inspired by Abakanowicz’s biomorphic paintings of imagined birds, plants, fish and seashells.

Film: The Witch’s Cradle

Location: Starr Cinema, Natalie Bell Building, Level 1
Time: 19.00–20.30

Inspired by Abakanowicz’s forest of sculptures and by Maya Deren’s unfinished and experimental film, The Witch’s Cradle, this programme proposes a new take on the archetype of the witch. Three films Witch’s Cradle and Spit on the Broom by Madeleine Hunt Ehrlich and The Fouled Compass by Madison Bycroft explore alternative histories of underground or clandestine women-led practices.
