The Telegraph: „Memories of Russian tyranny are driving Poland’s rearmament”

After Russia invaded Ukraine, Poland invested billions in new tanks, weapons, cyber operations, and manpower, with the aim of doubling its armed forces to 300,000 troops by 2035 – Steven Edginton is commenting in „The Telegraph”.

There is talk of Poland becoming a major military power in Europe.

In the article, Edginton explains that Poland can no longer rely solely on the United States and its NATO allies for protection, given the conflict on its borders and the constant threat of spillover. Poland plans to increase military spending to 5% of GDP, considerably more than other European capitals.

Edginton also highlights the importance of Poland’s history in this military expansion. Monuments to Soviet oppressors are still present in cities like Warsaw, and the human tragedy of Russian imperialism has haunted Polish families for generations. Many Poles are willing to fight for their country, as lessons of bravery and misery have been ingrained into their minds due to generational struggles against Russian aggression.

Poland values patriotism as a virtue, which is becoming increasingly rare in Western nations. As opinion polls show declining commitments to local communities, family values, and Christianity in the West, Poland must resist losing the bonds that hold its people together. It is up to countries like Poland to resist the risk of invasion and the cultural revolution spreading from the West.
