Iga Świątek flies straight to the third round at Wimbledon

On Wednesday afternoon, Iga Świątek validated her ticket for Wimbledon’s third round. The world number 1 was facing the Spanish   Sara Sorribes Tormo.

From the very start of the match, Iga showed who the boss is. A double break was enough for the Polish champion to take the lead by winning the first set 6-2 in just over 40 minutes. The second set was a formality for the 22-year-old, who completely outplayed her opponent with yet another of her specialities, a 6-0 – also known as a “bagel”.

On Monday, the young Varsovian will start her 67th consecutive week as world number 1, which would be a record among active players if the Danish Caroline Wozniacki did not recently announce her comeback on the WTA tour. Wozniacki has been the leader of the ranking for 71 weeks in total, which – for now – makes her part of the all-time top 10 in this regard. She could soon be taken over in this historical ranking, given Świątek’s encouraging form.

Last year, the Pole was already stopped at the third round in London, which means that she has no points to defend from now on. The only player who could potentially take over the throne this summer is the Belorussian Aryna Sabalenka. The latter gave a tennis lesson to the Hungarian Panna Udvardy in the first round and seems extra-motivated to take the lead in the ranking.

At the moment of writing, Hubert Hurkacz is about to face Britain’s Jan Choinski for a place in the third round. On Thursday at 11 AM (UK time), Magda Linette will try to beat the Czech Barbora Strycova and continue her journey at the All England Club.
