Iga Swiątek’s new coach Wim Fissette lavishly complimented the Polish star in a recent address to the press. “Iga is probably the best tennis athlete of all time. She’s very fast, defends extremely well, is very solid” – the Belgian explained. He expressed his excitement at the chance to work with the talented Varsovian, calling it „a great honour„.
Fissette explained how their partnership came together, revealing that Swiątek’s manager contacted him about ten days prior. Discussing Iga’s strengths, the Fleming praised her mentality and her relentless style of play. He also acknowledged that time will be needed to fully understand her game and help her improve further.
Fissette first gained attention when he helped guide Kim Clijsters to multiple Grand Slam titles, particularly during her successful comeback in 2009. His reputation as a top coach strengthened as he worked with other high-profile players, guiding them to major victories, including Grand Slam titles and consistent top-tier rankings on the WTA tour. Other stars he coached include Simona Halep, Angelique Kerber, Victoria Azarenka, and Naomi Osaka, to name but a few.
Swiątek, who hasn’t competed since her quarter-final exit at the US Open, hired Fissette after recently parting ways with her previous coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski. Her reign as world number 1 was recently interrupted by her great rival Aryna Sabalenka after having spent 125 weeks on top of the charts. The 2025 season will definitely be an exciting clash between the two leaders of the WTA in their fight for the throne.
