Ralph Lauren was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contribution to the US economy, classic style and dedication to supporting innovation in fighting cancer. In the motives for the award Lauren’s Polish roots were mentioned.

A son of Polish emigrants and US Army veteran, Ralph Lauren transformed a small necktie business into one of America’s most iconic brands, leaving a lasting imprint on the world of fashion, fragrance, furniture and beyond. Throughout it all he remains a dedicated philanthropist including fighting to end cancer as we know it. Classic yet creative, timeless yet innovative. Ralph Lauren reminds us of our distinct style as a nation of dreamers and doers,” the president wrote in the motives of the award.
Among those honoured were singer and U2 bandleader Bono; long-time editor-in-chief of American Vogue magazine Anna Wintour; former first lady, secretary of state and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton; and famous actors Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox.
Ralph Lauren is an American fashion designer, philanthropist and entrepreneur who has become an icon of fashion across the world.
He was born under the name Ralph Lifshitz on 14 October 1939 in Bronx, New York, to a family of Jewish immigrants from Poland. He has been passionate about fashion since his early years. His career began with designing ties.
In 1967, Lauren founded his brand, Polo Ralph Lauren, which remains a symbol of classic American style today.
The Medal of Freedom is a distinction that has been awarded by US presidents since 1941. It is awarded to civilians who have had a significant impact on the development of the country and have represented it with dignity on the international stage.
