Polish billionaire to build massive Virgin Mary statue, taller than Rio’s Christ the Redeemer

Roman Karkosik, a billionaire, decided to fund a monumental statue of the Virgin Mary, which will stand in Konotopie near Toruń. The idea is to create a regional attraction and to say thank you to its inhabitants.

According to the plans, the structure will reach a height of 55 metres, with 40.6 metres for the statue and 15 metres for the crown-shaped platform. The pedestal will also serve as an observation platform.

The statue’s size will exceed the height of the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, which measures only 38 metres.

The monument is planned to be finished by mid-2026. An official visualisation of the project was already published by the Wirtualny Toruń website.

Mr Karkosik’s most important business is Boryszew company, which is one of the leaders in the production of components for the automotive industry.
