Robert Lewandowski converted an important penalty on Monday 17 February against Rayo Vallecano. The Polish number 9 scored his 20th league goal while Wojciech Szczęsny secured yet another clean sheet to put FC Barcelona back in the leading position in La Liga.
Last weekend, the two other contenders for the title – Atletico Madrid Real Madrid – dropped points in their respective matches, which gave the Blaugranas the chance to get a better position in this particularly tight title race. As it stands, Barça and Real both have 51 points, while Atletico follows closely with 50 points.
As of mid-February, Robert Lewandowski also leads in the race for the best goalscorer of the season in the Spanish league, the prestigious Pichichi title. His main rival in this regard remains Real’s forward Kylian Mbappe with 17 goals. It is now also the 10th season in a row that “Lewy” scores 20 goals or more in the league in which he is playing, which is nothing short of sensational.
At 36, the Polish striker nicknamed “El Profesor” by Spanish media continues to impress. He needs only 9 more to reach his 100th goal with Barcelona. In addition to that, the Varsovian is 16 away from the magic mark of 700 career goals, which would further cement his status as an all-time great.
FC Barcelona’s next game will take place in Las Palmas on Saturday 22 February. Lewandowski is expected to be part of the starting squad.
