A strong start for the Poles at Wimbledon!

The long-awaited Wimbledon championship of Wimbledon has just started, and three Poles were playing in the afternoon: Igą Świątek, Magda Linette, and Hubert Hurkacz.

The world number 1, Iga Świątek, was the first Pole to validate her ticket for the second round in London. The Varsovian dominated the Chinese Lin Zhu in straight sets (6-1, 6-3).

Despite being the big favourite of last week’s Bad Homburg tournament, Iga was forced to withdraw before her semi-final to prevent an injury at the start of the prestigious British grand slam. Her first match at the All England Club showed her fans that they need not worry about Świątek’s fitness, at least for now.

Later in the afternoon, Magda Linette and Hubert Hurkacz also qualified for round 2. Both were interrupted by the rain but ended up with the upper hand. Linette eliminated the Swiss Jil Teichmann in two sets (6-3, 6-2), while Hubi won against the Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas (6-1, 6-4, 6-4). The Silesian already did better than last year when despite being viewed as one of the outsiders, he got eliminated as à result of his opening match against Davidovitch-Fokina.

At the moment of writing, the opponents of the above-mentioned Poles are unknown. What we do know in turn is that there will be another White and Red playing tomorrow at Wimby. At 3 PM (UK time), Magdalena Fręch will try to produce a miracle against the world number 6 Ons Jabeur from Tunisia.
