All COVID restrictions to be scrapped within weeks in Scotland

From the 28th of February, COVID certificates are already no longer required, which until recently a condition for entering mass events above certain audience thresholds and as well as night clubs.

First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon unveiled a plan to lift the restrictions shortly after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the lifting of the last restrictions in England.

Sturgeon stressed that Scotland will also move away from legal requirements and will rely on vaccines, medicines and responsible human behaviour to continue fighting the pandemic. However, she warned that „this should not be taken as a signal that COVID-19 no longer poses any health risk.

She explained that it would still be recommended to wear masks in stores and on public transport, as well as for infected people to isolate themselves. Coronavirus tests are to remain free, although this matter is to be detailed in the following days.

Earlier this week, Boris Johnson announced that from the 1st of April, free testing would no longer be available to everyone, but only to the most vulnerable and the elderly, without providing additional details.

The number of people who tested positive for the coronavirus is decreasing at an encouraging rate. The approximate number (5-6 thousand) cases recorded in recent days is three times lower than in early January during the peak of infections caused by the Omicron variant.
