Banknotes featuring King Charles III are now in circulation

These new notes will be gradually introduced into circulation, slowly finding their way into wallets across the UK. The portrait of Charles is to be found on all four banknotes – the £5, £10, £20 and £50.

While the head of state depicted on the notes has changed, many elements remain the same, including the colours and the historical figures featured on the reverse side. These figures are PM Winston Churchill, author Jane Austen, painter Joseph Mallord William Turner, and scientist Alan Turing.

The gradual introduction of the new banknotes was a request from the palace, aiming to save money and protect the environment. Consequently, it may take several months before the average Briton receives new notes in their change.

The Bank of England has outlined two exceptions to the gradual roll-out. Until the end of the month, individuals can send their old banknotes to the bank by post and receive new ones in return. Additionally, for the next week, people can visit the bank’s office on Threadneedle Street to exchange banknotes up to a maximum value of three hundred pounds.

In retail and dining establishments, the acceptance of both old and new banknotes remains unchanged. Payments can be made using notes featuring either Charles or Elizabeth.

In Scotland, there’s also a third option. Banknotes issued by the Bank of Scotland, Clydesdale Bank, and Royal Bank of Scotland do not feature the monarch’s image.
