BBC: Muhammad takes over Noah as the most popular boy’s name in England and Wales

Muhammad was the top choice for parents naming their baby boys in England and Wales in 2023, with more than 4,600 children registered with the name. It has been among the top 10 names for baby boys since 2016, but has now overtaken the previous favourite, Noah, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS),” the BBC informs.

It is important to note that the name is also known in other spelling variants such as Mohammed or Mohammad, and each of those also made the top 100 list for England and Wales. The ONS considers each of those spellings as a separate name.

The ranking of the most popular girl’s names is more stable with Olivia, Amelia and Isla leading the top list.

According to the ONS pop culture remains one of the most important factors in naming children in England and Wales. Artists such as Lana del Rey or Bille Ellish and celebrities like the Kardashians present ideas that seem appealing to contemporary parents.

In 2023 the royal names were significantly less popular.

Names such as George, Archie, Harry and Charlotte were also much less popular in recent years.
