Boris Johnson met with Mateusz Morawiecki in Warsaw to discuss war in Ukraine

During a joint press conference, both Prime Ministers emphasised their complete support and solidarity with the Ukrainian people and their President Volodymyr Zelensky. “[They] are fighting for freedom, for the independence of Ukraine,” stated Mateusz Morawiecki.

He pointed out that there are many refugees at the border and they are being given shelter in Poland. “This process is progressing quite smoothly, given the scale,” he assessed. In this context, the head of the Polish government thanked all those who engage in this aid.

All Poles who get involved, all friends from abroad, British friends, but most of all ordinary Polish families and non-governmental organisations,” he said.

When I visited Boris Johnson a few months ago, these scenarios hardly seemed realistic to anyone. However, we already warned against what could happen, because we saw Russian troops gathering around Ukraine,” recalled Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

He added that both countries are now „focusing on the sanctions package and strengthening NATO’s eastern flank.”

The British Prime Minister praised Poland for its involvement in helping the tens of thousands of refugees who are arriving in the country. “The Polish government and Poles are doing an amazing job,” he said. He also praised the courage of the Ukrainian leadership.

He further stressed that the UK also helps Ukraine. “We provide humanitarian aid as well as medical materials. We are ready to accept […] significant numbers of these [Ukrainian] refugees, Boris Johnson announced.

Putin is ready to use barbaric tactics. By dropping bombs on civilians, killing children […] I think that Putin did not appreciate the unity and determination of the West. We will maintain economic sanctions. This is the most severe sanctions package that has been introduced against any country in recent years, Johnson said.

He added that in his opinion, Putin “must lose” and that the West will manage to “protect and maintain the independence and sovereignty of a democratic Ukraine.”
