British Alumni Society temporarily halts scholarship programmes

The British Alumni Society has announced a temporary suspension of the BAS Scholarships qualification process for 2026, bringing a pause to a programme that has supported talented young people for over fifteen years. The decision follows a period of heightened international, political and economic instability, which has increasingly affected the operational reliability of British independent schools cooperating with scholarship initiatives.

In recent years, the British educational institutions have faced rapid organisational changes, including the withdrawal of previously confirmed scholarship places and, in some cases, the closure of schools. Such developments have made it more difficult to guarantee consistent, secure and predictable educational pathways for students.

Observers note that these disruptions pose significant risks for young people and their families, particularly when long-term academic planning is involved.

According to the Society, the suspension reflects a precautionary approach aimed at protecting students’ wellbeing and maintaining trust with parents.

The pause is intended to allow time for careful monitoring of the evolving situation and a reassessment of partnerships and conditions within the education sector. A further announcement regarding the future of the BAS Scholarships programme is expected after a comprehensive review in the coming year.
