Polish athletes have been achieving numerous successes in the last few years in various disciplines. Tennis, volleyball, basketball, swimming, football… Well, maybe not football. Anyway, last weekend, 16-year-old Fabian Urbański became the first Polish boxer ever to win the title of world cadet champion.
In the semifinals of the World Cadet Championships, Urbański had to fight hard to defeat Germany’s Festim Nimani. Dominated during the first two rounds, the young Polish talent managed to turn the tide and eventually triumph.
The final confrontation turned out to be the most spectacular of the whole competition. Urbański was facing Armenia’s Samvel Siramargyan, who was fighting at home. The Pole was leading 4:1 at the end of the first round and 4:0 after the second before eventually prevailing 4:1 (29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 28-29).
Alongside the young man representing the Skorpion Szczecin boxing club, three other Polish contenders achieved success. Zuzanna Gołębiewska (54kg), Igor Soczówka (54kg) and Oskar Grodzicki (52kg) all won a bronze medal.
