On Sunday the 19th of June, Hubert Hurkacz defeated the Russian world number 1, Daniil Medvedev, with authority to seal his first-ever title win on grass.
The Pole outplayed his opponent in the first set (6:1). He also quickly managed to break early at the start of the second set. The Russian showed some resistance, which, however, proved insufficient. Hubi was definitely at his best and sealed the deal with authority, despite his opponent having saved a match point (6:4).
Hurkacz’s victory is the logical result of his impressive form this month. The Silesian showed what he is capable of by defeating some of the toughest players on tour on his way to the final, including the promising Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime (7:6 ; 7:6) and the unpredictable Australian Nick Kyrgios (4:6 ; 7:6 ; 7:6).
By lifting his 5th career trophy, Hubi boosted his confidence in the midst of the upcoming Wimbledon, where he reached the semi-finals last year. If he reached the final, there is an encouraging statistic to be mentioned: he never lost in a final!
With Iga Świątek being in the form of her life and now Hubert Hurakcz giving a tennis lesson to the world number 1, Polish tennis fans can only rejoice and await the prestigious London tournament with impatience!
