During a post-match press conference the conversation with Polish tennis player Iga Świątek took a whimsical turn, with questions veering away from tennis and into culinary territory. Much of the chatter centered around Iga Świątek’s unexpected endorsement of a rather unorthodox dish: strawberries with pasta.

But the idea of orthodoxy here is different as most Polish families regard the strawberry pasta as a summer classic. 

“Everyone should try it,” Świątek said with a grin, referring to the summer staple she had already mentioned moments earlier during her on-court interview.

“It’s something children eat in Poland during the summer — it’s the perfect combination of flavours,” she explained, before launching into a light-hearted comparison of Polish and British strawberries.

“I think the climate in Poland is just better for strawberries. Though I’ll probably get kicked out of the tournament for saying that,” she joked, alluding to Wimbledon’s iconic strawberries and cream tradition.

Still, she offered a diplomatic nod to her hosts: “The strawberries here are great too — just different.”
