Poland’s former President Lech Wałęsa is currently in hospital due to an infection. The former leader of the Solidarity trade Union was taken to hospital earlier this week.
Last weekend, Wałęsa posted a photo of himself lying in a hospital bed on social media with a caption saying “It happens“.
The exact circumstances of the 78-years-old health degradation remain vague. Wałęsa reportedly went through a COVID infection in January. His general state of health had been deteriorating for at least a year.
On Thursday, he received the visit of the Mayor of his hometown, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz (Civic Platform).
The Nobel Peace Prize, accused of having collaborated with Poland’s Communist services while leading the Solidarity movement, underwent a heart operation in 2021.
Wałęsa served as Poland’s first President following the regime change from 1990 to 1995. Many Poles view him as a legendary freedom fighter, while another large part of Poles rather perceives him as a fraud.
