Lecture by P. Michalik: SS Karlsruhe & the Amber Room

Ognisko Polskie would like to announce that its Life Member Piotr Michalik, member of the intrepid “Santi find the Eagle team” searching for the lost Polish submarine ORP Orzel, is giving a talk about his latest expedition, this time to the Baltic Sea exploring the wreck of SS Karlsruhe which left East Prussia and was sunk in a Soviet attack in the closing days of WW2.

He will explain the link between ‘Operation Hannibal’, one of the largest evacuations by the sea ever known, and the famous lost Amber Room.

***
This chamber of precious amber panels was stolen by the Nazis from the Catherine Palace of Tsarskoye near St. Petersburg in 1941 and disappeared in 1945. There are many theories about its fate so might it be discovered on the wreck?

Piotr will give an account of the expedition in September 2021 to explore the wreck which is situated almost 100 m down on the Baltic Sea bed. The presentation will include underwater pictures and short film extracts and be followed by wine and cocktail snacks.

WHEN: Monday, March 14, 2022. Time: 7 p.m. for 7:30 p.m.

WHERE: Ognisko Polskie, 55 Exhibition Road, SW7 2PN London
