The weekend was quite unfortunate for Poles performing in Melbourne. On Sunday morning, world number 1 Iga Świątek succumbed to the Kazakh Elena Rybakina in two sets (6-4; 6-4). The Pole tried what she could but had to face the evidence that this time, her opponent was simply better.
Shortly after, it’s Hubert Hurkacz who got eliminated from the first Grand Slam of the year. The giant Silesian fought like a lion against the rising American star Sebastian Korda (6-3; 3-6; 2-6; 6-1- 6(7)-7(10)).
As a result, Poland had one player left in the draw: Magda Linette. The Polish player was certainly not the favourite against the number 4 in the world, Caroline Garcia.

Linette suffered in the first set. She was even down 0-3 early on. She eventually managed to force a tie-break, during which she showed great authority (7-6(3)). In the second set, the Pole displayed her best tennis and sealed the deal after a long and tedious battle which overall lasted two hours.
In the night from Monday to Tuesday, Linette will be opposed to the Czech Karolina Pliskova for a place in the final four.
