Poland launched the construction of a 2.5-meter barbed-wire fence along its 210-kilometre-long border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
Such a decision was made because of Warsaw’s concern regarding national security. The barrier aims to prevent illegal border crossings by African and Asian migrants.

As reported by ABC News, a spokesman for the Border Guard Agency, Konrad Szwed, told The Associated Press that the barrier would consist of an electric fence. “There is currently no barrier along the border, but there are frequent patrols by border guards,” he explained.

“I have decided to take measures to increase security on the border with the Kaliningrad Oblast. We will start building a temporary dam that will strengthen border protection,” – Poland’s Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak announced during a press conference on Wednesday.
Last year, Poland was targeted by a considerable wave of illegal immigration orchestrated by Minsk with the backing of Moscow. Warsaw then built a steel wall on Poland’s border with Belarus. The latter was completed in June 2022.
The work on the new fence began on Wednesday, 2 November and its completion is scheduled for the end of 2023.
