Polish Dunin oak elected European Tree of the Year 2022

The Three of the Year competition has been organised in the Czech Republic for quite a while by the Czech Environmental Partnership Foundation. Since 2011, an extension of this yearly award has been launched with The European Tree of the Year competition.

Polish candidates have already been on the podium of the competition three times. In 2017, the title of the European Tree of the Year was won by Oak Józef from Wiśniowa in the Podkarpacie region.

Four years earlier, the plane tree from Kozy near Bielsko-Biała finished second, and the following year, the Oak of Wybicki in Będomin in Pomerania arrived at third place.

The winner of the 2022 prize has been selected from a list of 16 trees from all across the continent, which already won at the national level. Poland was is represented by the Dunin oak from Przybudki, also known as the “Guardian of the Białowieża Forest”.

It is a great success for Polish nature and the people involved in this competition. I can only sincerely thank Agnieszka Aleksiejczuk and Tomasz Niechoda who nominated Dunin for the competition, as well as all those who voted for him. This is how we build together social capital around trees […] They remind us of who we are and what we should care for” – said the president of Klub Gaja, Jacek Bożek.

The official results of the plebiscite were announced on Tuesday in Brussels. Over 179,300 people voted for the Polish candidate, which gave it a comfortable advance.

During the plebiscite, a new record was set as nearly 770,000 votes have been registered.

In this year’s edition of the European Tree of the Year competition, 16 trees from various parts of the Old Continent competed for the main prize. Due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which coincided with the last week of voting, the organisers of the competition excluded Russia’s candidate from participation.
