Polish state company signs deal on constructing first nuclear powerplant

Polish Nuclear Power Plants (PEJ) and the Westinghouse-Bechtel consortium signed a bridge agreement on the initial works in the Polish first nuclear power plant project. The agreement sets out the framework for the next stage of cooperation in the construction in the Pomeranian region. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright attended the signing ceremony.

The deal, known as the Engineering Development Agreement (EDA), covers the continuation of detailed design work, including securing the necessary administrative decisions, licences, and permits. It also provides for further in-depth geological surveys at the designated construction site.

The new agreement was required following the expiry of the previous Engineering Service Contract (ESC) at the beginning of April.

PEJ, a state-owned company, is the investor and future operator of what will be Poland’s first nuclear power plant. The facility, to be built using Westinghouse’s AP1000 reactor technology, is planned for the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site on the Baltic coast.
