Robert Lewandowski signed a masterclass performance against Valencia

What a delight it has been to witness Robert Lewandowski getting back to his peak form on Monday! The Polish striker came to the rescue of Barcelona which was facing Valencia and ended up being the main architect of a spectacular 4-2 win for his team.

On Monday night, FC Barcelona was facing FC Valencia for an important league game. The Catalans needed to re-boost their confidence after a painful elimination in the quarterfinals of the Champions League against PSG. Although Real Madrid sealed the race for the title already weeks ago, Xavi’s team played at home and was determined to secure its second place in La Liga.

After having opened the score early via Fermín Lopez, things quickly got tricky for the local team. Valencia struck back two times and took an unexpected 1-2 lead from the 38th minute. Seconds before half-time, Valencia’s keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili received a red card outside his box and was sent out, giving back hope to Barcelona for a comeback.

The second-half of the match turned into an old school “Lewy show”. The Varsovian sniper equalised at the 49th minute with a clever header. But the best was yet to come. As the clock was ticking, the Blaugranas pushed ahead again and again. Eventually, Lewandowski gave a decisive lead to his team with another trademark header, turning the game on its head. Shortly after, just moments before the final whistle, the Polish star scored an absolute masterpiece of a freekick, sealing the three points for Barça.

With this hattrick, “Lewy” is back in the race for the prestigious “Pichichi”, three goals shy behind the current best La Liga scorer, Girona’s Ukrainian striker Artem Dovbyk. Alon with the latter, the former Bayern Munich superstar remains the most efficient player in Spain so far this season, with 16 goals and 8 assists. Quite remarkable for a player who is about to turn 36 this summer.
