The story centers on Maciek Chełmicki, a young resistance fighter tasked with eliminating a high-ranking communist official. After a fatal error causes innocent people to die, he is forced to confront both the consequences of his actions and the need to attempt the mission again. During this time, he becomes emotionally involved with Krystyna, a bartender at the Hotel Monopol. Their connection awakens in him a desire for a normal life and makes him reflect on the futility of continued violence in postwar Poland.
