#Sosabweekend’26 – Commemoration of General Stanisław Sosabowski in Scotland

The Consulate General of Poland in Edinburgh invites you to the annual events commemorating Gen. Sosabowski and the 1st Independent Parachute Brigade, which was formed in 1941 in the Scottish region of Fife. The ceremonies are organised together with many Polish and Scottish partners.
Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Edinburgh, Mirosław Sycz, said for British Poles: „As every year in August, we commemorate General Stanisław Sosabowski in Scotland, the founder of the 1st Independent Parachute Brigade. I would like to remind you that the 1st Independent Parachute Brigade consisted mainly of young volunteers and soldiers selected for their physical fitness – most were men in their twenties and thirties. They had their dreams and plans for the future… yet, far from Poland, they were ready to sacrifice their lives for the motto: “For our freedom and yours.”

Today, we owe them above all our remembrance, respect, and commitment to the values for which they fought.”

Cllr. Jim Leishman, Provost of Fife, previously said: „In Fife we are very proud of our historical links with General Sosabowski and Polish Armed Forces that assisted allied troops in defence of our country in the Second World War. This has resulted in a lasting legacy of links between Fife and Poland. Many Polish nationals settled in the area after the War and there is still a strong Polish community here.”

The story of General Sosabowski and the 1st Independent Parachute Brigade is an excellent example of the joint operations of Polish and British armed forces during World War II.
