Tour to a Hidden Studio at Southbank – Topolski Studio visit

Date: 14-07-2023 Hour: 12:00

Event place: Topolski Studio

Come and see the exhibition at the legendary Topolski’s Studio!  Joanna Dudzinska of Talking and Exploring is conducting a tour there next Friday at noon from the Embankment Station – sign up on Eventbrite to the tour here: To a Hidden Studio at Southbank and also to the visit to the studio here: Punks, Princes and Protests.

The irganisers have teamed up with Topolski Studio to show you the Punks, Princes and Protests exhibition held currently at the late Felix Topolski’s studio to celebrate the work of this talented and tireless chronicler of his times; work that ranges from people sleeping in the underground stations in the war, to the 1953 coronation procession, to street characters of later decades and as far as China and the States.

Meet outside the Embankment station (the river side) and then walk across the Thames via the Hungerford Bridge enjoying the views to the Southbank complex, the monuments to Nelson Mandela and to Frederic Chopin, a stop at a multiethnic food market for (optional) sustenance and then to the studios themselves where we will meet the artist’s grandson Lucien Topolski who is running the exhibition and is on a mission to secure his grandfather’s legacy.

You will need to book your exhibition ticket for 1.30 pm separately clicking here so that Lucien knows how many to expect .

Born and educated in Poland to assimilated Jewish parents, Felix Topolski came to Britain to report on King George V’s Silver Jubilee in 1935 for a Polish magazine and then stayed, working from his studio, first by the Grand Union Canal and then in the arches from 1951 until his death in 1989, following his involvement in the Festival of Britain. He painted a monumental work The Cavalcade of the Commonwealth for the festival. His monumental works and small sketches documenting both big and small events and people of these times deserve to be better known. The mural of The Coronation Procession has adorned the walls of Buckingham Palace since 1959. An expressionist painter and draughtsman, he regularly published illustrated chronicles of current events and scenes with his own succinct but lively commentaries.
