Ukrainian President urges the UK to impose harsher sanctions on Russia and to protect the Ukrainian sky

Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the House of Commons via a video call, during which he addressed British MPs with an emotional speech.

Referring to “the UK’s big history”, the Ukrainian leader compared the situation in which his nation is today to the Second World War and the British efforts to triumph over Nazi Germany.

He reminded the House of Commons of the war crimes that have been perpetrated by the Russians in the last few days, including the bombing of schools and hospitals.

We are looking for the help of the civilised countries. We are thankful for this help […] Please increase the sanctions against this country. Please recognise this country as a terrorist state,” Zelensky said, referring to Russia.

He continued by asking the MPs to “make sure that the Ukrainian skies are safe”. He closed his speech by urging the UK to “make sure [to] do what needs to be done and what is stipulated by the greatness of your country.

“Long life to Ukraine and long life to the United Kingdom,” he concluded, before receiving a standing ovation from the egg-full House of Commons.

The UK is already among the most active countries when it comes to humanitarian and military support for Ukraine. However, the Ukrainian leader made it clear that his country is expecting even more involvement of the West widely speaking.

Last Saturday, Zelensky already urged US lawmakers to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine. Nevertheless, this idea is regarded as highly risky as it would mean an open military conflict between NATO and Russia.
