A 24-year-old woman who was viciously assaulted in Glazja Park in the city of Toruń has died in hospital, two weeks after the incident. The victim succumbed to her injuries late on Friday evening, as confirmed by Andrzej Kukawski, spokesperson for the Toruń District Prosecutor’s Office.
The suspect, a 19-year-old Venezuelan national identified as Yomeykert R.-S., remains in custody. He was charged with attempted murder on 13 June. If convicted, he could face a life sentence.
At this stage, prosecutors have not reclassified the charges to murder, pending the outcome of a post-mortem scheduled for Wednesday.
“The autopsy must establish a clear causal link between the attack and the woman’s death,” Kukawski told the Polish Press Agency (PAP).
The court approved a three-month detention order against the accused, citing the severity of the potential sentence and the risk that he could attempt to flee. The decision was also based on the strength of the evidence collected so far.
The attack took place shortly after 1am on Thursday, 12 June. According to police, a passer-by heard cries for help and intervened, frightening off the assailant and immediately contacting emergency services.
Police tracked the suspect down just a few streets away from the scene. “Following the alert from the witness, officers were able to locate and detain the 19-year-old,” said police spokesperson Dominika Bocian. Initial reports suggest the attacker attempted to evade capture by hiding in nearby streets.
The victim, identified by media as Klaudia K., was left with severe injuries to her head, neck, and chest after being stabbed multiple times with a knife. She was taken to a hospital in Toruń, where she remained in critical condition until her death.
She is believed to have been returning home after finishing her shift at a local bar. Investigators say she was attacked near Plac Pokoju Toruńskiego, a central square in the city.
Deputy Prosecutor Rafał Ruta confirmed that the knife used in the assault has been recovered. He also said a sexual motive is among several theories being considered.
“Evidence has been collected from the scene, but at this time, we cannot comment further. A sexual motive is being investigated,” he added.
Prosecutors revealed that the suspect arrived in Poland legally in February. He has family residing in the country, but he was not employed. His mother is Venezuelan; no details are currently available about his father.
It remains unclear whether the suspect and the victim knew each other. Prosecutors stated that the accused remained calm during questioning but refused to answer any questions or provide a statement. Authorities have no information indicating he has a previous criminal record.
Due to the sensitivity of the case concerning a foreign national and the ongoing investigation, prosecutors are withholding further details for now.
