Daniel Finkelstein’s memoir recounts the experiences of his parents: Mirjam Finkelstein, who survived the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, and Ludwik Finkelstein OBE who was deported to a Soviet gulag. Born in Lwów (then in Poland, now Lviv in Ukraine) Ludwik reached Britain and became Professor of Measurement and Instrumentation at City University London. Daniel’s maternal grandfather was Dr Alfred Wiener, the Jewish activist and founder of the Wiener Library.
