Polish teenage students perform above the European average, according to the OECD

A recent study by the (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) reveals that the academic performance of Polish 15-year-olds is above average compared with other EU member states.

The 2022 edition of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) took the assessment of the mathematical skills of thousands of teenage students. When it comes to EU countries, only Estonia scored better in this regard.

The average score of Polish students in 2022 was 489 points, which is higher than the average for countries of the OECD (472 points). Singapore finished on top of the charts with an impressive 575 points.

The fact that young Poles continue to outperform their European peers is all the more interesting given the fact that Poland’s score in the ranking fell by 27 points compared with 2018.

Some observers like Deputy Education Minister Dariusz Piontowski attribute the significant decline of the Polish score to the epidemiological regulations which were implemented in Poland between 2020 and 2022 due to COVID-19.

PISA is considered one of the largest education studies worldwide. It analyses the skills of students globally and is carried out every three years among countries belonging to the OECD and beyond. The first PISA study was published in 2000.
