Poland has entered into a $2.5 billion agreement (equivalent to 10 billion PLN) with the United States to acquire an advanced air defence system.
Upon completion, Poland will become the inaugural nation, aside from the US, to utilise this system. The Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS) will be integrated into Poland’s medium-range Narew and short-range Wisła air defence initiatives, with delivery scheduled between 2024 and 2031.
Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasised the significance of the acquisition, explaining that the Polish army is acquiring “the most crucial component, which serves as the central intelligence of the entire system”. Speaking at a press conference alongside US Ambassador Mark Brzezinski, he assured that with this system, “Poland’s airspace will be safeguarded”.
“The Wisła and Narew programs will rank among the world’s most advanced, thanks to this integrated and cutting-edge command system. We will be only the second nation, following the United States, to possess such capabilities” – Kosiniak-Kamysz underlined.
Reflecting on recent events in Ukraine, Ambassador Mark Brzezinski explained the vital role of air and missile defence. “This procurement will equip Poland with the finest, most contemporary, and efficient defence tools to protect NATO territory” – he underlined.
The agreement inked last Thursday encompasses the procurement of essential command and communication equipment for the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS), as well as logistical and technical support along with a reserve of spare parts.

This deal signifies the latest component of an unprecedented surge in military expenditure that Poland has undertaken following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Under the former Law and Justice (PiS) administration, the defence budget was elevated to 4% of GDP, marking the highest proportional level within NATO. The new government, led by Donald Tusk, which assumed office in December, has committed to persisting in the modernisation and reinforcement of the armed forces.
In November 2023, Poland finalised a £4 billion air defence agreement with the UK. Additionally, earlier this February, the US State Department approved the $1.2 billion sale of radar reconnaissance airships to Poland.
