The F35 fighter jets and NASAMS anti-aircraft systems as well as 100 Norwegian soldiers will be stationed in Rzeszów, Poland to defend the strategic airport in Jasionka. Norway’s Defence Ministry says the move is aimed to secure Poland’s strategic role in the help for fighting Ukraine.
Norwegian Defence Minister Bjorn Arild Gram announced that F-35 aircraft and NASAMS anti-aircraft systems will be sent to Poland to protect the airspace over the logistics hub in Rzeszów.
Along with the fighters and anti-aircraft systems, Poland will also welcome 100 Norwegian soldiers who will be stationed in Rzeszów. Their task will be to support the forces present there in overseeing the security of shipments that later reach Ukraine via Rzeszów.
“Poland is making great efforts to ensure that both civilian and military aid is transported to Ukraine. Rzeszów airport also plays a key role in the medical evacuation process, and Norway is responsible for this assistance,” Norway’s defence minister said in a statement.
“Norway is participating in a joint effort that ensures that the needed aid reaches Ukraine,” the Norwegian Defence Minister concluded.
The head of the Polish National Defence Ministry, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, thanked Norway for its support.
“From December, another strengthening of the security of our borders. Four Norwegian F-35s, as well as their air and air defence systems, will protect our space and NATO’s eastern flank. Many thanks to our allies from Norway!” the Polish deputy Prime Minister wrote in an X post.
The Norwegian mission to Poland will be a part of the NATO defence programme and shall last until Easter.
