Poland and UK to discuss new defence pact during PM Starmer’s visit

The U.K. and Poland are working on a defence treaty that will cover everything from fending off Russia to tackling illegal immigration and safeguarding energy supplies, Prime Minister Keir Starmer will say on Friday on a visit to Warsaw,” Politico writes in an article by Joshua Posaner.

The coming U.K.-Poland Treaty will look to forge closer links between the two national militaries and coordinate efforts to tackle disinformation and hybrid threats,” the press statement from Downing Street published ahead of PM Satemer’s visit said.

Talks are expected to begin this month to agree the treaty, which will be a key pillar of the U.K.’s wider reset with Europe and builds on recent agreements with France and Germany,” the statement adds.

Poland and the UK are already involved in the Miecznik AH140 Frigate program which aims to modernise the Polish Navy with new vessels by the mid-2030s, and another £4 billion worth Narew program on ground-based air defence constructed in cooperation by the MBDA’s U.K. unit and Poland’s PGZ.

We have identical views with the UK and personally with Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the situation in Ukraine, on Russian aggression and on what to do, how to act,” Polish PM Donald Tusk said after welcoming his British counterpart.

Prime Minister’s Starmer travels to European capitals take place just days before the official inauguration of President Donald Trump and is aimed to present the US allies with the active involvement of European partners in defence policies.

During his trip, Prime Minister Starmer and his wife visited the Auschwitz Museum ahead of King Charles III’s visit at its 80th liberation anniversary.
