US President Donald Trump told NBC on Sunday that he is “pissed” and “very angry” at Vladimir Putin and his questioning of the legitimacy of Volodymyr Zelensky. He also threatened to impose ‘secondary tariffs’ on Russian oil if a truce is not reached because of Russia.
According to NBC, Trump’s words referred to Putin’s proposal to establish a UN-supervised government in Ukraine.
Trump also threatened to impose “secondary tariffs” on Russian oil, which would amount to 25-50 per cent, if a truce was not reached through her fault.
NBC adds that Trump has indicated, however, that while he believes Putin knows he is angry with him, he has a good relationship with him and his anger ‘will quickly pass (…) if he does the right thing’.
President Trump explained that the “secondary tariffs” would involve imposing taxes on imports of products from countries that buy Russian oil. The US had already banned the import of Russian oil into the US at the start of the Russian invasion in 2022.
If President Trump were to follow through with his threats, punitive tariffs could be imposed on the European Union, which continues to buy Russian oil despite the reduction in imports. The biggest buyers of crude oil from Russia are China, India, and Turkey.
