A Pole from Burton wins hearts of locals by creating a volleyball tournament

A Burton forklift driver and sportsman has set up a indoor volleyball league – and has ambitions to host an international tournament. Sebastian Jaworski, 39, who originally hails from Poland, initially set up the league to give the Polish community in town a sporting outlet.

The sport is popular in Poland and Sebastian’s league drew strong interest, but has since grown to attract people of all backgrounds.

And the Stretton man has announced ambitions to run a tournament for players across the globe.

He said: „I was surprised to see that no one had planned anything like this before. For me it was a opportunity to allow people to get together and at the same time do something for the Polish community in Burton. I wanted to link my events with Polish history. Therefore, my events were all held on iconic days linked with Poland, such as Polish Independence Day”.

„The first event I held was a table tennis tournament on November 11 2017, which was Polish independence day, and 15 people turned up, which for me was a good start. Off the back of a few other events, I organised my first volleyball tournament in March, which was for a holiday called the National Remembrance Day of the Cursed Soldiers – Sebastian added. „The tournament had 12 teams from all over the UK and more than 200 people came to support the teams. It was a great tournament and a lot of people were asking when the next was going to be. That got me thinking and I started planning a volleyball league. I had the contacts, sponsors and the venues to get started, so it was just a case of organising everything”.

Sebastian made sure the league was accessible for everyone, with each team having to have a minimum of two female players.

The opening of the Liga Amatorska Siatkowki, (LAS) which stands for Amateur Volleyball League, was in May and eight teams participated.
Fixtures are held once a month, with every team playing one another in a round-robin format on the same day.
So far, they have taken place at Shobnall Leisure Complex, Meadowside Leisure Centre and Etwall Leisure Centre, as well as leisure centres in Stafford and Leicester.
