According to GloucesterhireLive when King Charles II restored the monarchy to the throne in the 1660s he punished Gloucester for siding with the man who had executed his father at the end of the English Civil War. The walls were torn down and the boundaries of the city made smaller, leaving Barton without a Mayor.
In response the people elected their own Mock Mayor.
Recently the roll has become an annual position to honour those who have gone above and beyond doing their bit for the city. This year the position went to 33-year-old Pole Jarosław Kubaszczyk. He started the Polish association. Under his leadership, the Polish community has become more visible and a part of the city’s fabric, including organising an annual celebration of his former home nation’s culture.
Jarosław has written for British Poles portal:
„I was very excited about my first event as a Mock Mayor of Barton.
Gloucester Day is one of the best event in the cultural calendar of our beautiful City. All the communities, veterans, various organisations, charities and dignitaries going together in a colourful parade through the Gate Streets. Great performances and many stalls made a very successful day.
I was curious about my transport. When it arrived just before 11am – I’ve seen a giant duck. I’ve never expected that sort of „vehicle”. Everybody really enjoyed the grumpy duck, especially the children. I’ve proclaimed myself as a Duck Mayor of Barton.
I was welcomed by The Right Worshipful Mayor of Gloucester Cllr Colin Organ – the real mayor, we were exchanged a gifts, had some speeches, then all the party went to St Mary de Crypt Church for a Thanksgiving Service. I would like to thank Canon Nikki Arthy for a warm welcome. I loved the performances of the dance group and polish parish choir.
I had probably the best place in the main parade between Miss Gloucester and Polish parish priest – Father Dariusz and with some lovely goats in front of us. All the people were cheering and waving to Miss Gloucester, as well as were excited about the goats. Thanks to it I also was able to have a bit of fame.
I would like to say a big „Thank you” to all my friends for a great support on the day and all the good words. It was such an amazing and joyful day for me”.
