A 25-year-old Pole, Dawid Łukasz Miętus, has been sentenced by a court in Newry in Northern Ireland to a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison for the murder of his 20-year-old girlfriend Patrycja Wyrebek nearly two years ago.
The murder took place in August 2020 in Newry, where the couple had been living under the same roof for a few months.
The BBC reports that the perpetrator initially claimed that her death was an unfortunate accident in a “consensual smothering sex act”, but later admitted having lied and confessed to the murder at trial.
During the investigation, it also turned out that Patrycja had previously reported to the police that Miętus had resorted to violence against her.
Despite the various versions of the events presented by the killer after the murder, the court arrived at the conclusion that the killer was „immature and jealous” in the relationship.
The court also concluded that the fatal assault had initially been triggered by “a drunk quarrel over ex-partners.”
Given the sentence, the convicted Pole will be allowed to apply for release from prison only after 20 years, without any certainty that such a release will be granted to him.
And even in the case of a release, Dawid Łukasz Miętus will remain on probation and will risk returning to jail if he disrespects the terms.
