Estonia ex-President: “I was told Polish presence in Ukraine talks was blocked by Scholz”

In recent days, the British and Polish public debate was vocal about the meeting of Olaf Scholz, Immanuel Macron, Joe Biden and Keir Starmer to discuss the future peace plan for Ukraine. Most commentators saw the absence of a Polish leader as proof of a lack of understanding of the change in European geopolitics since February 2022.

Many British and Polish experts criticised the absence of Polish representatives.

In my opinion, Scholz has lost out politically, both integrally and internally, because this move is so incomprehensible that it is hard to fathom whether it makes any sense,” said Adam Szłapka, the minister of European Affairs in Poland.

The meeting in Berlin gathered high-ranking representatives from Germany, the UK, France, and the USA to discuss the war in Ukraine and the Middle East, though no officials from Kyiv and the Middle East were present.

The most interesting comment came from the ex-president of Estonia, Toomas Ilves: “I am told Scholz personally blocked Polish participation.“

It seems that European solidarity and the inclusion of representatives from Central and Eastern Europe in decision-making processes regarding the region remain problematic for the German government.
