9 września, 2022

The United Kingdom mourned the death of Her Majesty the Queen, who died at her home in Balmoral at the age of 96 on Thursday, 8 September. The crown was automatically handed over to her son, 73-year-old King Charles III, then-Prince of Wales.

King Charles issued a declaration in tribute to his mother, in which we read: “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty the Queen, is a moment of greatest sorrow for me and all members of my family. We deeply mourn the passing of our esteemed ruler and beloved mother. I know that her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country and in the Commonwealth of Nations, and by countless people around the world. In this period of mourning and change, my family and I will console and support each other with the knowledge of the respect and deep affection for the Queen.

The king could choose a different name or use one of his additional ones (his names are Charles Philip Arthur George) as some of his ancestors before him. Prime Minister Liz Truss was the first to announce that he would be known as King Charles III, which was later confirmed by Clarence House (former seat of the Prince of Wales and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall).

Among the previous princes who changed their names after they acceded to the throne were Queen Victoria, who was baptised as Alexandrina Victoria, Prince Albert, who became known as King Edward VII and Prince Albert, Duke of York, who became King George VI after the abdication in 1936.

Charles and his wife Camila went to Balmoral to be with the Queen after doctors expressed concern about her health. They later travelled to London with an Embraer Legacy 600 jet from Aberdeen, Scotland, and landed at the RAF Northolt Base in West London.

Though the king was automatically granted the title upon the death of his mother, the Accession Council is held within 24 hours of the death of the sovereign. In this case, this time was extended, as her Majesty’s death was announced on Thursday evening. The proclamation was held during the Accession Council On 10 September at 10.00, in the representative rooms of the Palace of St. James in London. It was read in public twice in London – at 11:00 from the balcony of the Palace and at 12:00 at the Royal Exchange in the City (the old headquarters of the London Stock Exchange). Charles III also gave a televised speech to the nation in which he paid tribute to the queen and promised that as the new sovereign, he would perform his service in the best possible way.
