For over a year, a team of orthopedists has been successfully implementing robotic techniques for implanting knee endoprostheses in the Marie Skłodowska-Curie hospital in Ostrów Mazowiecka. Local orthopedists make use of the revolutionary British Smith & Nephew NAVIO robot. There is no doubt that it is this very element which made the difference for the jury.
In a video shown during the last Polish-British Business Forum held on the 10th of March 2021, Artur Stolarczyk, head of the trauma and orthopaedic ward of the above-mentioned hospital explained the advantages of the NAVIO technology.
“The NAVIO system does not require the use of preoperative imaging as the entire knee reconstruction takes place in real time, creating a 3D model. This solution enables the correct positioning of the implants through the use of an appropriate surgical technique. (…) This allows the operation time to be shortened and allows the patient to return home faster,” he explained.
During the same event, Artur Wnuk, the director of the hospital, emphasized that this success story is due to “an efficient collaboration between the UK and Poland which made us the only robotic centre in Poland for arthroplasty of the knee joint.”
While speaking to local media after receiving the prize, he also proudly drew attention to the fact that “more and more specialists have a chance to learn that the hospital in Ostrów Mazowiecka aspires to be one of the most innovative facilities in Poland (…) We have better and better equipment, but most of all wonderful medical staff who (…) prove that we can treat [our patients] even better and more effectively.”
The presentation of the prestigious awards took place on the 3rd of October 2021 during a gala at the National Institute of Geriatrics, Rheumatology and Rehabilitation in Warsaw.
